Coast Rivalry Goes Up A Notch
When it comes to fierce rivalries you think of the New York Yankees vs Boston Red Socks, well with Caloundra Jets taking on Maroochydore Suns in the round 1 opener this had the potential to go down in history as another rivalry worth mentioning. Two powerhouse clubs, 15 minutes apart with dedicated one sided fans. This was no ordinary round game, this was war!!
Josh Shuttlewood said 2018 would see the rise of Maroochydore after a disappointing 10th place finish in Summer 2017 and round 1 he looked to show it wasn’t all talk. With Star Team Ivory Toast in his corner he was confident of taking down rivals Caloundra and showing the punters why they should consider them a serious title contender this season. Josh took last year’s mistakes and turned them into gold this time round crushing Caloundra with a 16 – 4 win.
In other games early favourites stumbled in backing up 2017’s form with Mackay & Bray Park going down in tough clashes. Ferny Hills carried in the underdog status leading into their first round game of the Social Media State Cup taking on last year’s runners up Mackay.
Ferny Hills who earlier in the week had been written off by the punters as slow starters, shot out of the gates and couldn’t be reeled in cruising past Mackay with a 10 – 6 victory. Ferny will need another strong start in Rd 2 taking on a seething Caloundra looking to bounce back into the winners circle.
Sitting on top of the table after round 1 are again Wavell Heights after proving their Summer 2017 dominance was no fluke easing past Maryborough and looking onto Rd 2. However they will be watching their backs as the likes of Townsville, Coolum and Cairns who all posted Rd 1 wins, plot their move to knock OFF Sherrie Wharerau and her loyal Roosters.
Caloundra Venue Manager Brad Rickards after their game said “Don’t write us off just yet”. “Now Round 1 jitters are out of the way our teams will be looking at those extra little 1%ers. LIKES & SHARES killed us this week and we will look to turn that around and get back into the title race”. We have Ferny Hills this week and we will be more prepared and ready to do battle”.
2017 Summer Teams Champions Ivory Toast (Maroochydore) have started where they left off coming out of round 1 with full marks again racking up 66 Points. Along with Maroochydore’s win over Caloundra this week they got a bonus 10 points taking them to 76 points. But this season it looks like they are not alone with Ball Grabbers (Maroochydore) Coolum Cob Loafs (Coolum) FDB (Wavell Heights) all recording the maximum 72 points.
When we quizzed the guys about what changed this year in their approach, all said “Stick to a simple game plan” “Every game night before we play we all sit down and do it together as a team. That we know all 11 team mates have completed the challenge. “It’s so easy to spend 30 seconds on Facebook each week to go into the running for FREE Fees & Uniform”.
